February:

„Once you read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you.“

Louis L‘Amour

Task: Spend one hour reading without distraction

Why do you want to do this?

I want to do this challenge because I get frustrated so often that I don’t read enough and feel like not investing enough time into reading in general. And because I thinks it helps me to actually read books till the end before I forget what happened before. There are some I would like to read again.

How do you do this?

It’s quite tricky because I like to read books during the day. Depending on my work situation it could become hard to maintain. Reading on public transportation doesn’t count as no distraction. No music. No phone. No internet. I could try going to the library everyday. Or a nice coffee place on weekends. I might set up regular hours. More details after the first try. Preparing books beforehand could help with pressure and the urge to procrastinate because you don’t have anything to read. Fucking read. Even if you don’t feel like doing so.

March:

„Language is wine upon the lips.“

Louis L‘Amour

Task: Learn a language for an hour

Why do you want to do this?

I always had a thing for languages, but I never had the discipline to learn vocabularies. And because there are some languages I want to refresh or get better at. Because I’m so fucking lazy that I need a challenge to maybe achieve something.

How do you do this?

If I don’t know the basics I learn those first. Otherwise I’m gonna watch/read something in the original language till I understand what they are saying. I might get some learning app/books to accompany that. I might find someone to text or talk. If I’m learning online I use a new browser and don’t let myself be distracted by anything. Do research before starting the project. Every media allowed if it helps with progress.

April:

„Take a walk on the wild side.“

Lou Reed

Task: Walk around for one hour without distraction

Why do you want to do this?

Because walks are great. Because I can let my mind wander. Because I can see new things I may have not seen before. Because I can feel the wind on my face. Because I want to learn to be more in the moment. Because I want to discover the world around me. Can it be April already?

How do you do this?

Depending on where I am, I’m gonna choose some destination to start and walk aimlessly for an hour with no goal or clue where I’m going. No music. No google maps. Only alarm for the one hour mark.

May:

„I believe myself that a good writer doesn’t really need to be told anything except to keep at it.

Chinua Achebe

Task: Write for an hour

Why do you want to do this?

The main reason is to make progress on my book. And maybe have some backlog on articles for my blog. Even though I love writing a lot, I always feel like there is more potential and that I’m not doing enough. (Yes, you suck. Because you are doing so much but still think that you don’t. At least you don‘t feel it ever.)

How do you do this?

Push hard. Change topics when you don’t feel like writing something. Push harder when your mind tells you that you can‘t. Write. Even when it’s some bullshit. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece every time. When you don’t find anything just write „I can do this.“ for an hour till you get so bored that you just have to start writing something else. And yes writing stupid lists counts as well.

June:

„Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live.“

John Woods

Task: Spend one hour with coding

Why do you want to do this?

Because I want to make some progress. On learning and later on personal projects. Because I want to finally understand this. And get good at it. Because yes, I can!

How do you do this?

I think the important part is to prepare resources beforehand. What do I want to learn? Where can I learn it? Or choosing a project and defining goals. You know stuff like being agile and planing sprints. Like the people in IT often say 😉

July:

„Photography is the story I fail to put in words.“

Destin Sparks

Task: Take a picture you really love

Why do you want to do this?

Because it‘s always been my regret that I dropped photography despite loving it so much. I hope to find some inspiration and some nice pictures I can look back. And maybe I won’t be satisfied with phone pictures anymore and start to use my camera again.

How do you do this?

Be more mindful of my surroundings to find the hidden gems I might want to capture. The goal is not just taking pictures. They need to be awesome or have a special meaning. Filter and Photoshop allowed.

August:

„I do not fear computers. I fear lack of them.“

Isaac Asimov

Task: Only 30mins of tech allowed

Why do you want to do this?

To be honest? I don’t want to do this at all. But I need to know how it feels like. Because I watched all those stupid ted talks of people telling stories how it changed their life. Because it’s supposed to help my mind develop ideas.

How do you do this?

Find other things to do seems like the best option. It’s gonna be hell not able to keep up with my anime shows for a month. But maybe that will make me more selective about what I’m consuming. Only 30min of whatever has to do with internet, TV, pc, phone, Tablett etc. Listening music on public transport allowed. Take summer break from blogging when you don’t have a backlog.

September:

„Drawing is putting a line (a)round an idea.“

Henri Matisse

Task: Draw/paint one hour

Why do you want to do this?

I was always somewhat attached to drawing, but too lazy to do anything in that direction. I remember that I looked forward to art classes every week to work on my stuff. I might find something valuable while doing this challenge. But being relaxed and having fun is more than enough.

How do you do this?

Pick some project(s) and prepare stuff necessary for it before starting and just do it?! Might do some research about this topic before the first try.

October:

„The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.“

Task: Do sports for one hour

Why do you want to do this?

Because it’s a challenge and because I need challenges. But mostly because I don’t think you can go wrong doing this. Because being for feels good.

How do you do this?

It doesn’t matter what I do, just do a sporty activity. Yes, stuff like paintball counts. Even golf. Walking doesn’t. Only if it’s on really demanding route. Just dancing alone at home is fine. Stretching and yoga as well. Like literally whatever. Just do it.

November:

„Clutter is evidence of excess.“

Task: Get rid of one thing

Why do you want to do this?

Because I think that we all carrry too much clutter around. Because less is more. Maybe because I know that things are not equal to happiness. Because I’m scared of getting rid of things.

How do you do this?

Choose one thing you don’t need and get rid of it. Objects, people, contracts. Anything goes. If there is no value and can’t be gained in the future, then I don’t need it anymore. Things that belong in trash don’t count.

December:

„Learning to treat ourselves lovingly may at first feel like a dangerous experiment.“

Sharon Salzberg

Task: Self care and meditation

Why do you want to do this?

Because damn, I had such a productive year and I totally want treat myself for some amazing things, celebrate and chill out. Because I need some time off and time for reflection.

How do you do this?

Do something you love and makes you happy. Repeat this instruction for 31 days.
